The Story of Peter Rabbit is a children's book by Beatrix Potter that follows the naughty and disobedient young Peter Rabbit as he enters and is chased throughout Mr. McGregor's garden. He manages to flee and returns home to his mother, who tucks him in with chamomile tea. In 1893, the story was written for Noel Moore, the five-year-old son of Potter's former nanny Annie Carter Moore. After being rejected by multiple publishers, Potter reworked and privately issued it in 1901, but Frederick Warne & Co. printed a trade edition in 1902. The book was a hit, and it was reprinted several times in the years following its first release. It has been translated into 36 languages and is one of the best-selling books in history, with 45 million copies sold.
