Description
Atlantis: The Lost Empire is a 2001 American animated science-fiction action-adventure film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation. It is the company's 41st film and the first science-fiction film. Michael J. Fox, Cree Summer, James Garner, Leonard Nimoy, Don Novello, Phil Morris, Claudia Christian, Jacqueline Obradors, Jim Varney (in his final role), Florence Stanley, John Mahoney, David Ogden Stiers, and Corey Burton star in the film, which was written by Tab Murphy, directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, and produced by Don Hahn. The film is set in 1914 and follows a young linguist who acquires a holy book that he claims will lead him and a crew of mercenaries to the lost city of Atlantis.
The film's development started after the completion of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996). Rather than another musical, the production team chose to make an action-adventure film based on Jules Verne's works. Atlantis was notable for embracing comic book designer Mike Mignola's distinct visual style. The film used more computer-generated imagery (CGI) than any of Disney's previous traditionally animated films, and it is also one of the few to be filmed in anamorphic format. Marc Okrand, a linguist, created an Atlantean language designed specifically for use in Atlantis. The film's score was composed by James Newton Howard. The film was released at a period when audiences' interest in animated films was moving away from hand-drawn animation and toward films that used complete computer graphics.
